Books: Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

Stargirl is a book that I believe everyone should read. It is about high school, about life, about surviving in a world of “same” ;  about being different, being who you are and who you want to be. Stargirl is an inspiring read.

This small young adult novel starts with a bold cover featuring just the authors name and a drawing that represents Stargirl. And it only gets better. Told from a teenage boy’s point of view, the story is about how one day a formerly home schooled girl starts going to public school – and turns everything on it’s head. She is unlike anything that anyone there has experienced. She inspires both emulation and hatred. Singing Happy Birthday to individuals publicly, wearing different clothes, thinking about others more than herself, meditating in the desert, cheering for everyone at a sporting event (even the other team), Stargirl confuses and engages her new classmates.

I loved this book because it made me remember, it made me think and it made me want to take action in my own life. I can’t even imagine if I had read it when I was actually in high school, or middle school.

Have you read Stargirl? What did you think?

I’ve heard there is a sequel, and I think I’m going to seek it out soon. I need a little more Stargirl in my life.
