This past month I didn’t do as much reading as I wanted to, but I did re-read Wicked and finally tackle it’s sequel Son of a Witch.
I first read Wicked by Gregory Maguire about 10 or 11 years ago before I saw the musical for the first time. The book and musical are very very different; and quite honestly, I like the musical more. I still sort of enjoy the book, but it doesn’t feel like it’s about the characters. It’s about something bigger. Son of a Witch follows this theme even more so and by the middle I was literally just reading to finish the book. I prefer character driven stories.
What I love about the musical (other than the incredible music) is that it is more character driven and incorporates more of the original Oz story than the novel does. One of the things I really dislike in both books is the random relationships that have absolutely no lead up whatsoever. In the musical, character relationships make a lot more sense.
There is a third book in the series, A Lion Among Men, and I haven’t decided if I want to read it yet. Have you read these books? Is it worth reading the last in the series?
